Memorials at the Pond

LIST OF MEMORIAL PLAQUES AND TREES AT EAST BLATCHINGTON POND at 12.6.2026

Starting at corner of Sutton Drove and Blatchington Hill – by EAST BLATCHINGTON POND sign and going clockwise

  1. Older style bench – made by Cedric Trenfield in 1980/90s: brass plaque STEVE TAIT, died 1998. New top put on but the bench will need replacement in the next 2 years
  • On KEEP OFF sign on bank to pond, again Cedric’s work: brass plaque to WINIFRED STRINGER un-dated. THIS SIGN NEEDS REPLACEMENT – 1 of 2 signs

  • Modern bench with 2 plaques: HAZEL TRENFIELD died 2020 and CEDRIC TRENFIELD died 2023 – this was bench put in by Cedric for his wife, both had very long standing connections to the pond.
  • Memorial whitebeam tree – much cut back – no plaque – planted by the family at The Coppice, 1 Blatchington Hill, in memoriam of their son, Stephen O’Keefe, in 2011.
  • Older style slatted bench – dating from 90s?: engraved into wood:  PADDY TIZARD died 1995 – hard to read due to weathering
  • Memorial tree, flowering ornamental pear planted 2024 in memoriam of CEDRIC TRENFIELD, but currently no plaque – EBPCS would like to put one up
  • Older style bench made by Cedric (as item 1): brass plaque CEDRIC AND GLADYS HATT OF OLD MANOR COTTAGE  will be reinstated when the bench top is replaced. This bench requires replacement
  • Newer style bench in middle of grass facing pond: brass plaque PETER AND CAROL RUMBLE un-dated, circa 2020
  •  Memorial Crab apple tree (mature) near road with post and plaque: HAYLEY JORDAN  – un-dated but tree is more than 10 years old, and research suggests she died in 2011 aged 16.
  1. Memorial Gorse bush in corner of plot, with post and plaque: DIANA STILES Lewes District Councillor 1985 – 7 and 1991 – 95, First Seaford Liberal Democrat Councillor
  1. Memorial Rowan tree (mature) with carved post (Cedric’s work)
